Jeanie M. Gartly

Jeanie has over 30 years’ experience in architecture, heritage, urban design and planning in the private and public sectors. She began her career in architecture specializing in health care design – the bringing together of design and function.  It’s been said that hospitals and health care facilities are “little cities in themselves.” Upon further education in urban planning, Jeanie worked for twelve years in the public sector with the City of Calgary and the City of Medicine Hat.  At the City of Calgary, she gained experience in land use, outline plans and subdivision and in policy planning on the creation of the Beltline Area Redevelopment Plan and the Calgary Centre City Plan.  At the City of Medicine Hat, she project managed and led consultants and internal departments on the Downtown Redevelopment Plan and Municipal Development Plan and project managed and prepared the River Flats Area Redevelopment Plan.  Jeanie returned to private sector consulting after her public sector years to lead several urban projects including Currie Barracks, an urban infill redevelopment of a former golf course, transit-oriented developments and Moose Jaw’s Downtown Local Area Plan.  She equally brings with her a wealth of heritage planning from her architectural conservation skills, work on the Heritage Resources Committee in Medicine Hat and recently the heritage designation amendment for Currie Barracks and Heritage Strategy for Downtown Moose Jaw.

Ultimately, Jeanie’s passion and experience on projects and continued professional development have been in heritage conservation and the role it plays in revitalizing downtowns and established communities.  Over the years, Jeanie has applied her heritage training and experience to such projects as the conservation of the Smoke Stack as a part of the Eau Claire Market Redevelopment, with the Medicine Hat Redevelopment Plan (ensuring that the Main Street Program was envisioned again), River Flats Area Redevelopment Plan, Ewart Duggan Heritage Garden Project, and Currie Barracks Historic Resource Sites.  Her heritage contributions include significant work with the Heritage Resources Committee in Medicine Hat between 2007 and 2013 as the municipal planning representative. This role entailed ensuring appropriate heritage policy was in place, formulating and working with the Committee/stakeholders and heritage consultants, preparation of municipal designation bylaws and interventions on behalf of Council.  She has actively pursued heritage conservation training and advocacy through the Provincial Municipal Heritage Forums, as a speaker and participant at the Heritage Canada National Conference hosted in Calgary, and through two courses through the University of Victoria Continuing Education (Downtown Revitalization Through Heritage Conservation and a further course on Industrial Heritage sites).

She has the passion, commitment and understanding of downtowns, communities, heritage and urban public realm projects including the sensitivities and challenges of the development industry on heritage and redevelopment sites.  She has demonstrated skills in team building, team leading, communication, negotiation, strategic thinking, creative problem-solving, and analytical thinking while she also has the personality and interpersonal skills to evolve the content and people dynamics of internal and external stakeholders.  Jeanie is enthusiastic when it comes to learning and contributing to ensuring the documentation of the stories and heritage conservation of buildings and urban places is achieved for the value it brings to maintaining and/or creating a unique “sense of place” for a city/community.

Other life-long learning pursuits include the creativity found in culinary arts, history, travel, reading, writing, and music explorations -- all playing a role in her passion for heritage conservation and urban design.
